I'm biased due to relative experience, but I would say Unity generally puts out more tutorials themselves and provides slightly more accessible documentation to hobbyists (They also released the C# portion of their codebase a while back). To some extent it's a feedback loop, where Unity has a larger casual community and therefore sees more community educational content, making it more welcoming to newer developers or small teams without a lot of resources. If you wanted a more accurate look you'd have to analyze the keywords of people's CVs rather then just their LinkedIn description. I would imagine that people mostly experienced in Unity will just say that they're a Unity dev, while people experienced in UE4 will use a more generic term instead.

Unreal is only really competitive in the PC and console space in comparison. I would say that being a "Unity Developer" is more like a job title, or a skill you would put on your CV in the same way you might put down something like Photoshop, Maya, Substance Painter, etc, rather then something that defines your entire career.Īlso, people forget that Unity is huge in the mobile market (something like half of all mobile games use it) and there's usually a whole lot more of those jobs to go around. There's a reason why Unity is used all the time in game jams and in schools.īut really, any decent programmer or artist should be able to pick up both Unity and Unreal if they take the time to learn the language/toolset. Probably because Unity has a much lower barrier to entry, especially on the coding side (C++ is just a really heavy duty language to learn, especially if you're just making 2D games). All you have to do to see this is find a post on reddit more than six months old and look for the number of comments about tencent/china. these complaints were unrelated to china. I mean VERY recently theyve gotten shit for that, but Epic has been getting a lot of shit for swooping in and taking game releases. I think people are very mislead about the recent events with china, and seeing how Tencent has invested in Epic,īut thats not it, sadly. I don't think they really care about the store and the epic-dev split.
